A 17-year-old girl was outside her home getting something from her car when she was approached by two men wearing masks. They forced her inside the home at gunpoint. The teen’s father saw the assailants with his daughter and retrieved a firearm. He then fired several shots. The teen’s mother also retrieved a firearm and fired. Both men were struck. One of the home invaders collapsed on the living room floor and was pronounced dead at the scene. The second suspect returned fire before fleeing the home. He was later arrested after being treated for gunshot wounds to the chest and both thighs. He now faces charges of second-degree murder, kidnapping, burglary and armed criminal action. No other injuries were reported. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis, MO, 6/11/14)

Sharon Doyle, 46, was working alone at Stan’s Health Food just after 5 p.m. when a man walked into the store and threatened her with a knife. He walked behind the counter, picked up the cash register and smashed it on the floor. As he stooped to pick up the scattered bills, Doyle reached for her revolver. The robber stood up and held his knife to Doyle’s chest, prompting her to open fire. The robber was struck once in the chest. The assailant was later taken to a local hospital where he died of his injury. Doyle was reportedly shaken, but unharmed during the hold-up. Her father commented on the incident, “I never thought it’d happen like this, but, if it had to happen, I’m glad it was this way.” (Philadelphia Daily News, Mayfair, PA, 6/24/14)

The father of a 2-year-old girl did what he could to protect his child. When he and his daughter were sightseeing together at an area lake one afternoon, they were approached by a man wielding a knife. The man demanded money. The father immediately thwarted the robbery attempt when he pulled out his concealed firearm, prompting the man to flee in a van. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported. (Idaho Press-Tribune, Coeur d’Alene, ID, 6/23/14)

Police responded to a report of a burglary in progress around 11 p.m. A 56-year-old woman and her 15-year-old son were at home when two armed men broke in through the front door and demanded money. During the robbery, the son was shot in the leg by one of the offenders and the mother was shot in the arm when she attempted to flee. The woman’s husband was in a different part of the home when he heard the gunshots. He retrieved a firearm and walked in on the robbery in progress. He fired several shots, striking both offenders. Both intruders fled the scene on foot.  Warrants were issued for their arrest, and they face charges on two counts of aggravated assault and one count of burglary. Both mother and son were treated for their injuries and are reportedly expected to recover. (The Valdosta Daily Times, Valdosta, GA, 6/18/14)

When a man heard his disabled neighbor cry out for help, he quickly responded. The neighbor had tried to break up a fight between two neighborhood dogs when they turned on him. The dogs attacked him, biting his arms and legs. When the man responded to his neighbor’s cries for help, he carried his firearm. He first yelled at the dogs to divert their attention away from the neighbor being mauled. When the dogs started toward him, he shot and killed both animals. The neighbor who was attacked was taken to a local hospital, but his condition was reportedly not known. The man carrying his firearm was reportedly not harmed during the attack. (Contra Costa Times, Isleton, CA, 6/5/14)

Four people were leaving a Fourth of July get-together when one of them noticed a cup of liquor on top of her vehicle. When she removed the drink, a 22-year-old man attending the party next door threatened her and her friends. After shouting obscenities and threats, he briefly left the area only to return with a gun. He proceeded to fire shots at the group, injuring a 22-year-old woman. One of the males in the group retrieved his own firearm and returned fire, striking the assailant twice. The group was then able to escape the aggressor. The female victim was reportedly in stable condition after suffering wounds to the arm and back. The assailant, who now faces an attempted murder charge, was also taken to the hospital and reportedly in critical condition. No other injuries were reported. (The Chicago Tribune, West Pullman, IL, 7/6/14)

Studies indicate that firearms are used over 2 million times a year for personal protection, and that the presence of a firearm, without a shot being fired, prevents crime in many instances. Shooting usually can be justified only where crime constitutes an immediate, imminent threat to life, limb, or, in some cases, property. Anyone is free to quote or reproduce these accounts.
